Media M8 cinematographer Jürgen Gottschalk loves light and loves to talk about it. During the Saturday afternoon (November 10, 2012) workshop at TVSB, he guided participants to appreciate and reproduce beautiful lighting for video and TV production. With the goal to improve the quality of participants’ programs, this workshop introduced the goals of lighting and basic steps on how to achieve specific looks by applying basic lighting principles with easy to implement steps. Oftentimes, light is taken for granted and not considered as a creative component in visual storytelling, especially in documentaries, corporate videos, or training programs. The key to incorporate the beauty of light in a video production, you have to look beyond “it’s there” (day) or “not” (night) and assume creative control over this frequently underestimated medium.
Oftentimes, content producers are focused exclusively on the “story” and not so much on the “look.” And it shows.
Participants learned how to control different variables of light through easy and inexpensive measures and how to do so safely and without breaking back or budget. In a hands-on session, participants were able to work with SBTV’s lights to get comfortable with the equipment and achieve beautiful lighting.
